Auction for Analogue Airwaves

To decide on new use for spectrum

Now that the switch over has started for digital airwaves for TV, there will be more space freed up for other functions. An auction will take place in 2009 by the regulators to decide the new use. The decision will be made by a Market led approach.

The available spectrum's that will probably bid for the space are: National digital terrestrial TV in high or standard definition, cognitive radio that will deliver broadband, high speed mobile broadband and mobile TV or local TV for 25 new local TV stations across the UK. BBC, Channel 4 and ITV want the space for high definition TV. A group made up of Sony, Samsung and Dixons want to use the space for a two tier TV nation for those who are prepared to pay more to access better quality TV pictures.

Reports suggest that some of the space has to be used as "white space"; this will prevent interference between TV transmitters. White space is needed for events like 2012 Olympics and work by TV broadcasters, as they would not be able to use microphones.

Although High definition TV seems like a stronger contender for this new space, Broadband and mobile TV may be seen as more worthwhile. Ofcom say that HD pictures might not be a necessity for the airwaves as the could be delivered over digital terrestrial TV.
