Few things are as commonly seen in homes around the world as a television set. Whether listening to music, watching a prime time television show, or viewing a favourite movie, television has become a industry leading in technology and advancements around the world. As advancements have brought the world a clearer image, a better quality, and a quieter picture, digital has quickly started to replace analogue in many homes. However, there is a digital wind blowing around the world and when the cloud finally settles, analogue will absolutely be replaced by this digital frequency modulation. What does this change mean to normal customers like you and me? Well, it means that once analogue has been replaced, only digital viewing will be possible. While change is not always easy, changing to digital may be advantageous now rather than later. On 17 October, 2006, more than 25,000 people in Whitehaven found the analogue channels had been literally switched off. This move was the first of many such moves planned in an attempt to eradicate analogue from not only the UK, but from the world. The US will turn of its analogue channels in February of 2009; Japan will follow suit by switching off their analogue in July 2011; and Germany has plans for joining this popular trend by turning of its analogue on a secret date not yet released to the public. In Britain, there are about five (5) remaining analogue channels that will be following suit shortly – BBC1 and BBC2, Channel 4 and Channel 5, and ITV. Not to fear, analogue viewers will find the few channels they once got on a normal aerial is most likely now available on a digital channel. Why the sudden race to switch to digital? Digital television is a trend quickly replacing the older analogue televisions of yesteryear. Anyone who has watched analogue television know the noise, the static, the interference, and the low quality that comes with analogue broadcasting. Digital offers a must more reliable, cleaner, and stable broadcasting signal for the consumer. The televisions available today all come with digital capabilities as default. However, the switch to analogue does not come as a big surprise to most people. Usually, only a few channels are available via analogue broadcasting, and those channels tend to only work when weather or other conditions are optimal. Chances are most people will not miss the analogue broadcasting channels available. Should you go ahead and make that jump to digital if you are still using analogue broadcasting? The obvious answer here is most definitely. Analogue broadcasting is quickly disappearing, and preparation means purchasing one of the many digital televisions or add-on boxes ranging in price from only a few pounds. These televisions can be purchased new, used, or refurbished. There is literally no reason to not take the leap to digital if you still use analogue television. There are of course numerous methods for getting your favourite television viewing preference by going digital. There are digital broadcasting providers such as BT and Sky; there are digital boxes a person can purchase to then receive either free or paid digital service; and for those of us with roaming TV requirements there are even mobile phones now capable of providing high quality digital channels. The digital service providers understand that this change is occurring, and of course, there is a profit to be made. Most of the digital service providers offer packages deals where digital television is virtually free, or almost free, with the purchase of other services such as broadband Internet access and/or mobile phone service. If you have a broadband provider, mobile phone provider, or landline telephone provider, the best idea would be to give them a call or visit the website and investigate the offers available for adding digital television to your already existing account. If you want the best price, investigate the introductory offers offered by the various providers. There are numerous popular companies, and all of the offer something unique. Switching to digital from analogue is a proactive step into your future. Besides, digital offers so many more benefits than the analogue broadcasting popular for so long. The future is here, and the future is analogue-free. |
